113ml done over 5 days cycling. Day 1, 30ml to a cheap hotel 4kms before Rio Claro. After saying goodbye to ilmer and Nancy who made another great breakfast and coffee, I head into town to say goodbye to Marina and Nelson. I’m sad to leave after 3 wks here. I go to the small port for the lanchas and get a boat across Rio Magdalena to Puerto Perales, it’s 40p and the bike is free. I say goodbye to Steven the teacher who gave me some Spanish lessons, and his family. then it’s a quiet road to Santiago Berrío and the main highway for medellín.
Day 2, Now the climbing starts and I only manage 21ml to hotel Mangos, due to an uncomfortable pain in my knee. I stopped for something to eat and decided to stay as the next place was another 7km up the mountain. I got talking to Edwin the owner who spoke good English and gave me a few beers.
day 3, 25ml, lots of climbing today again. I met Paula, a young woman from Medellín taking a tour to Magdalena in her holidays from work. Some nice views today and stopped at hotel Miranda de cocorná, it was nice with a swimming pool and beautiful views.
Day 4, 24ml. Finally reached the top of the climb at Santuario at 2,260m. Was hard with the sore knee but it seemed a little better today. I had downhill now to Rionegro and found the cheap hotel turista and had a day off. The restrictions are in place over Fri, sat and sun, where you can’t go out due to covid and hospital beds being at full capacity in medellín so in this municipality it’s a case of staying indoors all weekend. I got a reply off warm shower host, Jose in La Ceja and if you are doing sports you can go outside, so I go the short distance to la Ceja and meet José and his family and stay 2 nights. Very nice family and very kind. José is even taking his 1st tour to Capurganá, around 1,000kms. A friend of José called Christian takes me to Salto del buey the next day. It was tough getting there but worth it for the views alone.
